‘Micro WAstewaTer Treatment System using Photocatalytic Surfaces’ (Micro WatTS), a University of Malta lead project co-financed by INTERREG V. A. Italia-Malta, is developing a micro greywater treatment system, a step in the right direction when it comes to tackling the problem of water shortage in Malta and Sicily.
The first step of the three year project (2018-2021) was the identification of a number of materials with water treatment potential. Test samples were produced, characterised and their effectiveness tested periodically in order to assess their water treatment capability. The best performing materials were then installed in prototypes and field tested by carrying out bacteriological and chemical tests on the treated water. The results obtained were very satisfactory.
The distinctive aspects of the project include:
- Transfer of the innovative technology to SMEs,
- Adoption of the technology developed by SMEs,
- Financial and non-financial assistance to SMEs.
More specifically, one of the outputs of Micro WatTS is the provision of support to twenty (20) SMEs in Malta and Gozo, operating in any sector including tourism, manufacturing, sports and fitness, education and others. Support shall take the form of free advice concerning water saving by greywater reclamation and other measures. For this reason, a call for expression of interest is being issued to identify SMEs wishing to receive free advice on water saving measures. The selection of the 20 SMEs receiving advice shall be based on the number of employees and/or daily number of clients/ guests, and on a first come first served basis.
SMEs wishing to apply for this free service are required to fill in the application form here or bit.ly/microwatts_SMEs
Applications shall remain opened till 30th November 2020.
